I think the solution to all my video problems is codecs-gnome.ymp but i will still have to confirm this
Confirmed !! the above file installs all the required files you need to find videos and all the codecs . It may give you a warning on some files . I installed them anyway.
Do you have compiz enabled. If yes, then open VLC, goto Settings->Preferences and check the Advanced options checkbox at botton of the settings window. Now expand Video from left column and click on output modules. In the drop menu on right side, select X11 video output. Click Save button and restart VLC. Check now with the FLV files.

after all the googling the below file just popped up on my search and it stared to install the files needed to play the videos
