Flu Trends in 121 U.S. cities

We now have city-level flu trends for 121 U.S. cities in Google Flu
Trends — our most granular Flu Trends data to date. These estimates
are "experimental," meaning they haven't been validated against
official data. However, the estimates are made in a similar manner to
our U.S. national estimates, which have been validated.

Introducing Nexus One

The Nexus One mobile phone powered by Android is now available. This
device combines the latest hardware from HTC, featuring dynamic noise
suppression and a 1GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon™ chipset. It's also powered
by the latest Android software, which includes a voice-enabled
keyboard, Google Maps Navigation, fun Live Wallpapers and a 3D photo
gallery. With the launch of Nexus One, we also introduced a new way to
purchase a mobile phone — through the Google-hosted web store. You can
buy the Nexus One without service (meaning any GSM network SIM card
can be inserted into the device), or purchase the phone with service
from T-Mobile USA. More operators, including Verizon Wireless in the
U.S. and Vodafone in Europe, more devices, and more countries will be
added to the store in the future.

Places near me now

Need to find a nearby restaurant, coffee shop or bar on the fly — or
maybe an ATM or bank? "Near me now" uses your phone's location
information to help you search for nearby places easier and faster.
With just a few taps you can check out customer reviews, jump to a map
to help you get there or call the business. To try it, go to using your Android or iPhone browser and click on "Near me
now". Note that you must first enable My Location by tapping the
location "update" link. This feature is available on in the
U.S. for Android-powered devices (2.0.1+) and iPhone (3.x+).

Upload any file

You can now upload, store and share any file in Google Docs, giving
you one place where you can upload and access your key files online.
We support files up to 1GB in size. So instead of carrying a USB drive
or emailing a file to yourself, you can use Google Docs to access your
files on different computers. This can also help you work with teams
to organize and collaborate on information online, especially when
combined with shared folders.

Supporting disaster relief in Haiti

Following the 7.0 magnitude earthquake in Haiti, we released a
globally available page with detailed post-earthquake satellite
imagery, opportunities to donate, other resources and avenues to help,
mapmaker data, and free voice calls to Haiti through Google Voice.
Using 20 percent time, Google engineers also developed the Person
Finder application for identifying and updating the status of missing
people, which can be embedded on other organizations' websites.

Google Favorite Places

Based on Google users' interaction with local business listings, we
identified more than 100,000 businesses in the U.S. as "Favorite
Places on Google". Each business is receiving a window decal with a
unique QR code that you scan with your phone to read reviews, star the
business as a favorite and more.

The lost cause

For 2 years the core members in bewelcome did not care about its users and now they send an email

sad sad sad

let history not be forgotten and the BOD meeting minutes on the bewelcome wiki show how creativity was shot down at the BOD meetings and its was the BOD which made the last decision hence stiffling the community ,choking it till it existed no more.
Also the mailing lists of the dev will show the arrogance of the dev past and present on bewelcome which ultimately killed the project.

from the start till now bewlcome still consist of the SAME active members (closed circle of friends)

One of the things always worried me is the fact bewelcome is too european centered
The European centricity of BW is actually a very interesting point and it deserves a bit more explanation:

* BeVolunteer/BeWelcome was founded in Europe (France) and you can clearly see this in the membership numbers. In a way, this is normal: we will always grow in concentric circles around Europe.
* This specific travel culture (online hospitality exchange) is a lot more dominant in Europe than anywhere else. Even Couchsurfing (an American org) has more members in Europe than in the US!
* Some things, like safety, communication and verification are incredibly hard to do in places where you might not have an official address.

This all means that hospitality exchange will probably always be "bigger" in Europe than anywhere else. But that's not neccesarily a bad thing, it is just what it is.

by tgoorden (totally sad reply)

"The biggest problem is people who sign up with good intentions, and then after a few logins they give up and never show up again.

I imagine the number one reason is the experience when using this site."

I really doubt that. I think reason number one is that they don't have that much use of the site. Either they don't get guests or they don't find hosts - that would be the main reason in my eyes.

This shows that the core decision makes have for the past 3 years had no idea on what is causing the network to fail.

"The biggest problem is people who sign up with good intentions, and then after a few logins they give up and never show up again.

Dear BeWelcome member,

Today I am going to ask you for your help. Today I am going to ask you to make a difference.

BeWelcome is a website, but it's also a community which you have chosen to be a part of. It is also a place where ordinary people like you and me have put in thousands of hours of voluntary work to make the community interesting, fun and functional. It may surprise you, but no one has ever been paid for any of that hard work.

BeWelcome is unique in another way, because it is the only truly democratic online hospitality exchange network. This means that this is the only place where your voice, your opinion truly matters. BeWelcome is built on this promise, this opportunity:

"Creating a hospitality community based on collective work, democracy and transparency."

But we're in serious danger of losing this opportunity. We are not growing as we'd like to grow. We have trouble keeping our donations flowing. We're simply not seeing the usage and the support that BeWelcome needs. Out of frustration regarding this current state of affairs and because of serious time constraints, Florian has stepped down as chairman of the board of directors of BeVolunteer (the legal organization underneath this all) and asked me as former vice chairman to take over. I would like to personally thank Florian for his voluntary work so far, but especially for the strong wake-up call he is giving us in this way. Because he's right: making BeWelcome work sometimes seems like an impossible task with very little in return.

That's why we need your help. We need you to speak up, to let us know if you still care about this project.

You can do this in many ways:

* You can vote with your feet. You can log in and make your presence known:
put up a picture, update your profile, write a reference, join a group. Or - if you are not interested any more in participating - terminate your account.
* You can participate in this evaluation phase by letting your voice be heard in our forums. Tell everyone what you think should be done. Make suggestions.
* You can make an even stronger statement: donate. This one is simple; if we can't get enough donations, we will simply not be able to afford the rent for the website servers anymore. This will be the end of the community no matter what. You know BeWelcome doesn't ask for money often, so when we do, it's serious. Donate.
* Volunteer. Join one of the many efforts to make BeWelcome work. Or, show your appreciation to any of the hard-working volunteers out there.

I'm going to do my part as well. Together with the entire board of directors, I will try to reach out to other organizations to form long-term alliances. We will also listen to you, read and process all of your suggestions/comments/questions and create a poll in the very near future that will determine where BeWelcome is headed.

Show that you care. Make this community live.
Log in, participate, debate, donate, volunteer or send thanks. Make a difference.

Thank you,
Thomas Goorden, new chairman of BeVolunteer, and the BoD

adding static pages to blogger

Blogger pages let you to publish static information on stand-alone pages linked from your blog. For example, you can use pages to create an About This Blog page that discusses the evolution of your blog, or a Contact Me page that provides directions, a phone number, and a map to your location.

You create a page similar to how you write a blog post. From Blogger in Draft click Posting | Edit Pages tab, then click New Page. (Note: you can create up to 10 pages)

Once your page is published, you can link to it from the new Pages widget. The Pages widget lets you add links to your pages as tabs at the top of your blog, or as links in your blog's sidebar. (Note: existing third party templates may not support pages as tabs, but pages can still be added as links in your blog's sidebar)

In the Pages widget, you can decide which pages will have links, and in what order they will appear. You can also choose whether or not you want links automatically created for pages when you create them by checking or unchecking the box to the left of Add New Pages by Default.

For information on how to add a gadget to your blog, you can visit Adding a Gadget

Gmail security tips

What's new in Gmail?

  • Gmail now even more secure: HTTPS by default

    HTTPS encryption keeps your mail secure as it travels between your web browser and Gmail servers, so someone sharing your favorite coffee shop's public wifi can't maliciously read it. Banks and credit card companies use this same protocol to keep your online accounts safe. To protect your Gmail account, we've turned on the option to "always use HTTPS" for everyone. This added layer of security can make Gmail slower, so if you don't use unencrypted wireless connections, you can choose to disable this option in your account Settings. Even if you change this setting, Gmail will always encrypt the login page to protect your password. Learn more

  • What's been keeping us busy...

  • More storage for less money

    If you need more space for your email and photos, you can now buy 20 gigabytes of storage for only $5 a year. Extra storage is shared between Gmail and Picasa Web Albums and acts as an overflow if you use up your free storage. Learn more

  • New features for Gmail on iPhone and Android
    Point your phone's browser to and enjoy Gmail complete with full label support, an outbox for messages composed while offline, the ability to mute messages, and more. Learn more

  • New in Labs: "Got the wrong Bob?" and "Don't forget Bob"
    Ever included Bob (your boss) instead of Bob (your friend) on an email by accident? Oops! Turn on "Got the wrong Bob?" and Gmail will check if you meant to include Bob Smith rather than Bob Jones based on the groups of people you email most often.

    With "Don't forget Bob," you can start composing an email to a group of people, and Gmail will suggest other contacts you might want to include. Check out these experimental features and more on the Labs tab under Settings.

  • Four more themes
    Make Gmail look like a calm patch of grass or an old school video game. Can't decide? Choose "Random" and cycle through a different theme each day. Check out all available themes from the Themes tab under Settings.

  • New in Labs: Message translation
    Turn on "Message translation" from the Labs tab under Settings, and whenever you receive an email in a language other than your own, Gmail will automatically translate it into a language you can understand with just one click.

  • Tasks: the first graduate of Gmail Labs
    Available in Gmail, Google Calendar, iGoogle and on your mobile phone, Tasks is the simple to-do list that's with you everywhere you go. Click "Tasks" above your chat list to get started (no need to turn it on from the Labs tab anymore). Learn more

  • Drag and drop labels
    You can now drag labels onto messages and messages into labels, just like folders. The labels you use most often are easier to access right above your chat list. The rest are hidden but still accessible under "more." Customize which labels you see from the Labels tab under Settings. Learn more

  • New in Labs: YouTube, Picasa, Flickr, and Yelp previews
    Instead of just links, see previews of photos, videos, and reviews right in your email. Turn on these and other experimental features from the Labs tab under Settings.

  • New in Labs: Undo send
    Oops, hit "Send" too soon? Give yourself a grace period of a few seconds to cancel sending, then edit your message before sending again. Turn it on from the Labs tab under Settings.

  • Tasks mobile
    Take your to-do list everywhere you go. Just go to from your mobile browser.

  • New in Labs: Offline
    Make Gmail work even when you're not connected to the internet. Turn on offline access from the Labs tab under Settings.

  • Labels: auto-complete and "move to"
    The buttons and menus at the top of your inbox look a bit different: there's a new "Labels" button that makes labeling messages even easier. Turn on keyboard shortcuts and hit "L" to bring up your labels, and auto-complete will take it from there. Use the "Move to" button to label and archive in just one step -- just like you would with a folder. Learn more

  • Gmail stickers
    If you sent in a self-addressed stamped envelope postmarked by February 14th, 2009, you got back some free Gmail stickers. We may be all about speedy electronic communication, but this time we went old school with snail mail.Learn more

  • Fast PDF previews
    Now you can preview PDFs right in your browser without waiting for them to download and open in another application. Just click the "View" link next to any .pdf attachments you receive.

  • New in Labs: Tasks
    Keep track of what you need to do with a lightweight task list right inside of Gmail. Just click and type to add new tasks, convert emails into tasks, and (most satisfyingly) check them off as you're done. Once you turn on this Labs feature, look for the Tasks link to the left of your inbox under Contacts. Turn on tasks and more from the Labs tab under Settings. Learn more

  • New in Labs: Text Messaging in Chat
    Send SMS text messages right from Gmail. You chat from your comfy computer and reach your friends on the go; they get your messages as texts and can peck out replies on their little keyboards. Turn on SMS text messaging and more from the Labs tab under Settings. Learn more

wordpress and drupal

PluginManager is designed to allow users to install modules and themes.

Wordpress Import
This module imports a WordPress blog into Drupal from a WordPress eXtended RSS (WXR) file.

- Go into the Blogger Settings and Export your blog to the XML (Atom) file it provides.
- Create a account.
- Create a temporary blog within your account.
- Go into the Site Admin section, and select Tools from the panel down the left-hand side.
- Select "Import" from the expanded menu Tools item from the menu down the side.
- Import the XML (Atom) file from Blogger.
- Export your blog.
- Install the the wordpress_import module ( to your Drupal site.
- Import the file that created on Export into this module.

Browse for a Blogger export file press 'Convert' to translate that file into a Wordpress WXR export file suitable for importing into a Wordpress blog.

In Comparison to Wordpress_Import

The Wordpress_Import module work towards a similar goal, but there are several differences:

* Wordpress_Import uses an WXR export file from Wordpress whereas WP2Drupal interacts directly with the database.
* WP2Import has greater flexibility with the import:
o You can decide what content types to use for posts & pages
o You can decide what vocabularies to use for categories and tags
o You can use Path_Redirect to catch the old URLs but still use PathAuto to give them new URLs; GlobalRedirect will make it even more transparent
o You can (optionally) clear out (truncate) existing content tables to start with a fresh copy of your content
* Wordpress_Import is somewhat more user-friendly.

Ultimately, though, WP2Drupal will be merged into a more useful all-in-one migration tool.

phpbb form mods

This form allows users to apply for a certain team positions. The applications are send to a hidden forum where the administrators can read them and see if the users are good enough for the position.

See Menu item with blank title in state (Disabled)

If you enable it your forum page will be with title.
Reset will help to remove the page title if you disable it back.

Main page and link to phpBB in frame is

All links from blocks will have that link instead of real phpbb.

First go
3. Go to Administer › Site building > Menus > Navigation
See Menu item with blank title in state (Disabled)

if you do not see this item then

2. Go to Administer › Site configuration > Performance
Clear cached data

If you see Menu item with blank title in state (Disabled) you may go to

3. Go to Administer › Site building › Menus › Primary links
See Menu item phpbbforum (disabled)

If you do not see it, simple enter it with path phpbbforum
(may be i entered it before but forgot)

A couple of attemts and everything will be ok.

Successfully connected to the phpBB database.
Successfully authenticated phpBB user: admin.

If not, something wrong in your settings and it is no sense to go further.

Add URL aliases. Core module Path must be enabled.

Main page and link to phpBB in frame is

To change this name you may add URL aliases

Add next URL aliases (System path -> URL Alias)

For the path 'forums'

phpbbforum -> forums
phpbbforum/viewtopic.php -> forums/viewtopic.php
phpbbforum/viewforum.php -> forums/viewforum.php
phpbbforum/viewonline.php -> forums/viewonline.php
phpbbforum/memberlist.php -> forums/memberlist.php
phpbbforum/posting.php -> forums/posting.php
phpbbforum/search.php -> forums/search.php
phpbbforum/ucp.php -> forums/ucp.php
phpbbforum/mcp.php -> forums/mcp.php
phpbbforum/faq.php -> forums/faq.php
phpbbforum/report.php -> forums/report.php
phpbbforum/adm/index.php -> forums/adm/index.php

Administer › Site building › URL aliases › Add alias

Existing system path:

Specify the existing path you wish to alias. For example: node/28, forum/1, taxonomy/term/1+2.

Specify an alternative path by which this data can be accessed.
For example, type "about" when writing an about page.
Use a relative path and don't add a trailing slash or the URL alias won't work.

All links from blocks will have that path 'forums' instead of system phpbbforum.

If you prefer name phpbbforum add these aliases

phpbbforum/viewtopic.php -> phpbbforum/viewtopic.php
phpbbforum/viewforum.php -> phpbbforum/viewforum.php
phpbbforum/viewonline.php -> phpbbforum/viewonline.php
phpbbforum/memberlist.php -> phpbbforum/memberlist.php
phpbbforum/posting.php -> phpbbforum/posting.php
phpbbforum/search.php -> phpbbforum/search.php
phpbbforum/ucp.php -> phpbbforum/ucp.php
phpbbforum/mcp.php -> phpbbforum/mcp.php
phpbbforum/faq.php -> phpbbforum/faq.php
phpbbforum/report.php -> phpbbforum/report.php
phpbbforum/adm/index.php -> phpbbforum/adm/index.php

You cannot enter directly
phpbbforum/viewtopic.php -> phpbbforum/viewtopic.php
the paths should be different when creating alias but they can be edited.
First create alias with different paths like
phpbbforum/viewtopic.php -> phpbbforums/viewtopic.php
Save, then edit to the same paths
phpbbforum/viewtopic.php -> phpbbforum/viewtopic.php

It works with or without Clean URLs enabled.

1. If your forum under /phpBB3 your alias cannot be /phpBB3, choose another name.
2. Check in Menus phpbbforum item without title (Disabled).

I installed this on a local test computer using Apache2Triad under localhost and everything worked fine.

1 Installed Drupal
2 Installed phpBB
3 Installed phpBB module
4 Activated the module
5 copied the functions_user file
6 set phpbb settings under the Drupal admin
7 logged off & back on and everything worked.

Drupal 6.4 and phpBB3.0.2 have the same admin name "Dummy" and password.

Installed phpBB3 3.0.2 two ways:
1) Same level as Drupal 6.4
2) Inside Drupal 6.4

I followed the directions in INSTALL.txt and copied over:
1) functions_user.php
2) functions_user-3.01 (and made it functions_user.php)

+/phpbbdrupal (phpBB forum root path: /home/vb/www/
+/root ---------------------> +/phpBB3/
+/includes -----------------> +/includes
******* functions_user.php ----------> functions_user.php (replace or patch)

You should disable phpBBforum Menu item and restore its blank title in Navigation Menu item to (disabled) state
You may need to switch off and on inframe mode.
You may need to clear in Performance Clear cached data.
Do not enable blank phpBBforum Menu item. Reread INSTALL.txt 10) 3., 4.
It is creative process that has a solution, try this game, not seeing a cannot say do 1,2,3.

wordpress phpbb bridge

There are a couple of great ways to integrate phpBB with WordPress.

WP-United is a powerful yet compact modification for phpBB 3. The package integrates WordPress, the leading blogging and content management tool, into a phpBB community.

Use WordPress as a stand-alone portal, or as a fully-integrated blog system

The choice is yours! The multitude of clean, well-designed templates for WordPress make it an excellent choice for a site homepage. If you want, you can allow community members to comment on WordPress posts, or give them their own fully-fledged blog with a choice of themes.

Combine WordPress, or phpBB, into the look and feel of your site

You can choose to have WordPress appear inside your phpBB header and footer – as users browse posts or articles in WordPress, they will also have access to phpBB function such as log in/out, profile, and private messaging.

If you prefer, you can also choose to have phpBB appear inside a WordPress page!

Many owners of phpBB sites will have spend a long time customising the look and feel. You won’t have to duplicate this as WordPress will sit inside your existing header and footer, without any modifications! And the reverse is true too, for owners of WordPress sites.

New in v0.7.0: If you want phpBB integrated inside a WordPress page, the phpBB3 header can be auto-removed, while still retaining the phpBB3 quick search box. For existing WordPress users, this means that with a few clicks they can deploy a phpBB forum to their blog sites, with little fuss.

Automatic login integration

Users don’t need to register for a separate WordPress account – it is all managed behind the scenes by the integration package.

You can choose how user levels are mapped from phpBB to WordPress – for example, you could give phpBB users the ability to create posts, mods the power to edit posts, etc… or you could allow only phpBB admins to create posts, and everyone else to comment… the choice is yours. You can even turn the mapping completely off – allowing WordPress to use its own login system.

A management panel is provided so you can view a list of WordPress users and see how they are mapped to phpBB users.

drupal smf bridge

1) Download the SMFforum module from or

2) Download the latest smf_api_2 archive from
See the "license.txt" file for details of the Simple Machines LLC license.

3) Copy smfforum directory to your modules directory .../modules/smfforum/

// This is for drupal not smf. For drupal 6 you need to use your site file manager from your cpanel or FTP to upload the files to the module directory.

upload the file smfforum-6.x-1.21.tar.gz to the /modules directory .

Extracts the files to a new folder called smfforum (the extraction automatically creates the files. You just need to be in the /modules/ directory with the file in the same directory.

if you try to upload it to smf you will get the error

The package you tried to upload either is not a valid package or has become corrupted.

4) Unpack smf_api_2 archive and copy it to subdirectory

this is for the SMF forum not drupal
upload to the smfforum directory under modules and extract the files.

this extracts

inflating: smf_api_2.php
inflating: smf_api_subs.php
inflating: smf_api_2_examples.php
inflating: README.txt
inflating: license.txt

5) Follow the instructions in README.txt file.

you may get an error

Error locating /home/sitename/public_html/smf/smf_api_2.php. Please fix your settings!
Unable to connect to the SMF database. Please fix your settings!

you need to change the path to where your drupal module is located

Error locating SMF installation. Please fix your settings!
Error locating . Please fix your settings!
Unable to connect to the SMF database. Please fix your settings!

the above was because i extracted them into the drupal module not the smf forum folder

Installing and configuring Advanced Forum - 6.x

Successfully locating /home/indiarec/public_html/smf/smf_api_2.php.
Successfully connected to the SMF database.
You are not authenticated in SMF now. Please login to SMF and test again. You may refresh settings!

We used smfforum but had so many authentication problems (users would have to login, go to the forum, then logout and back in) that we switched to the excellent Advanced Forum module.

Enables the look and feel of other popular forum software.
Depends on: Forum (enabled), Author Pane (enabled), Taxonomy (enabled), Comment (enabled)

  • Requires: Forum, taxonomy, comments, Author Pane, phptemplate based theme
  • Recommended: Statistics (for views counter) and Flatcomments (to avoid issues due to the underlying threads when forums are visually set flat.)
  • Others: For a complete forum package, see this list of other contrib modules.

Users can post topics to forums. Forums can appear below other forums in a hierarchy, or can appear in containers.Containers are 'parents' for forums (discussion boards); they are used to group forums. Users cannot post topics to containers; users post to the forums in the container(s). A site with only a few forum discussion boards may not need any containers.
